We are planning a trip to Scotland in early May. Although we are personally not terribly concerned at this point by the coronavirus situation, we do have one question. Are the government’s precautions likely to impact either our travel to and from Scotland or the ability to see the sights whilst there? I know this is in part a request to foretell the future, but if there are any indications as to what the Scottish government is likely to do which would affect us, we’d appreciate knowing what is the current thinking.

As predictable as whether the US government will let you leave the country, which you presumably don’t know either.

You might not meet many Jamaicans in the Highlands but you might not meet a lot of Scots either. Enjoy your trip. I know that people get the wrong impression of the Scots because of the name of the largest political party ” The Scottish National Party”, but unlike other ‘National ‘ political parties which tend to be Ultra Right Wing, the SNP at very much ‘Social Democrats’ and lean very much to the ‘Left’ politically’.

It’s a sad world we live in that it would even occur to you that this kind of question needs to be asked. Although prejudice exists everywhere, you’ll not find it much in evidence throughout the UK, which is about as multi-cultural as it gets. Scotland has a vast deep-sea area stretching out to the nautical mile boundary, encompassing a range of diverse habitats as well as economic resources such as fishing, oil and gas. In addition to scientific interest in the deep sea, policy makers are required to protect many of these poorly understood habitats and the often fragile ecology and biodiversity that they support. Increasing access to deep sea habitats and exposure through various media has also stimulated significant public curiosity in the life found in these deep, col, dark environments.

A more holistic approach to studying the deep-sea is needed which requires engagement with researchers representing a variety of disciplines, including ecologists, chemists, physicists, modellers and climate scientists. These researchers have to be supported by technology that can operate remotely under extreme conditions. Only then can we truly begin to understand how the ecosystem functions.

The MASTS deep-sea forum has several initial aims highlighted below, which will evolve over time, to:. Deep sea researchers operating within the mASTS community have access to a variety of state of the art equipment, some of which has been specifically designed to operate and sample in the deepest parts of the world’s oceans.
