Report Jobs and Unemployment. Download PDF. Press release. Since the election of Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin and Governor Mark Dayton in Minnesota, lawmakers in these two neighboring states have enacted vastly different policy agendas. Governor Walker and the Wisconsin state legislature have pursued a highly conservative agenda centered on cutting taxes, shrinking government, and weakening unions. In contrast, Minnesota under Governor Dayton has enacted a slate of progressive priorities: raising the minimum wage, strengthening safety net programs and labor standards, and boosting public investments in infrastructure and education, financed through higher taxes largely on the wealthy. Because of the proximity and many similarities of these two states, comparing economic performance in the Badger State WI versus the Gopher State MN provides a compelling case study for assessing which agenda leads to better outcomes for working people and their families. At the time of the November elections, most states were still reeling from the economic devastation caused by the Great Recession. Although the recession had officially ended in , the low point of the labor market was in —the country continued losing jobs until March of that year.

For the foreseeable future, MinnPost will be providing daily updates on coronavirus in Minnesota, published following the press phone call conducted by the Minnesota Department of Health MDH with Gov. Tim Walz and administration officials each afternoon. The deaths represent the largest one-day spike in deaths so far, though 17 also died on April Most of the deaths were among residents of Hennepin County and elderly people living in long-term care.
Since the start of the outbreak, Minnesotans have been hospitalized and are currently in the hospital, in intensive care. Of the 2, confirmed positive cases in Minnesota, 1, no longer need to be isolated, which means they are considered to have recovered. More information on cases can be found here. MDH officials say preventing spread in long-term care outbreaks continues to be a focus for them. While that may include visitors, since they have been restricted it also includes staff who must care for the elderly.
The disease can spread rapidly within long-term housing because people live in close quarters. The state is actively coordinating to prevent infections in long-term care facilities with small outbreaks and implement plans to head off larger ones that staff at a facility may need extra help with. The state has listed 90 assisted-living facilities in which at least one staff member, visiting service provider or resident has tested positive for COVID, though MDH has so far refused to identify outbreaks in facilities with fewer than 10 residents.
